<p>After graduating with a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering in 1986, I worked as a Process Engineer at Shell Oil Company for over six years. I then received a fellowship from the British Council to pursue an M.Eng. program at Heriot-Watt University, UK.</p>
<p>In 1995-1998, I obtained my MSc/PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering from Saga University, Japan. I then joined the hydrometallurgy group at the University of British Columbia as a post doctoral fellow where I was involved in an innovative research project of Falconbridge Ltd. At the University of Toronto as a post-doc research fellow, I carried out state-of-the-art research on nickel ore processing using pressure hydrometallurgy. This was a project of INCO Ltd., during their investigation of different alternative process strategies to recover nickel from the newly discovered deposit of Voisey&#8217;s Bay.</p>
<p>In 2001, I took a position of hydrometallurgist with Process Research ORTECH Inc. at Mississauga , where I was actively involved with different challenging projects of mining, metallurgical, chemical and recycling industries. I am a recipient of industrial fellowship from Materials and Manufacturing Ontario (MMO). I also received a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) fellowship through NSERC to work as a &#8220;Visiting Research Scientist&#8221; at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan.</p>
<p>After spending two years in a highly technologically developed research facilities at AIST, I headed back to Vancouver, taking a position at Fluor Canada Ltd., where I was involved with different projects for the pre-feasibility study, feasibility study and detailed process engineering works to design a commercial copper production plant for Phelps Dodge at Arizona. In November 2006, I moved from the west coast to the east coast to establish my new research base in hydrometallurgy at Memorial University, where&#160;I was a tenured Associate Professor until August 2014. I am now an Associate Professor at the University of Saskatchewan.</p>
<p>My research interest is Hydrometallurgy. I hold 2 patents and over 80 publications with presentation in different conferences. I am a registered Professional Engineer both in Ontario (PEO) and Newfoundland &amp; Labrador (PEG-NL). I am an Executive&#160;Committee Member of the Hydrometallurgy Section of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) and currently hold the office of "Secretary". I am also the "Vice-Chair" (2013-2015) of the "Hydrometallurgy and Electrometallurgy Committee" of The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS), one of the largest professional organizations, headquartered in&#160;Pennsylvania, USA. I am actively involved with the committee in organizing different international conferences, such as, the Conference of Metallurgists (COM) in Canada; &#8220;Rare Metals Extraction &amp; Processing Symposium" at the TMS 2014 conference in San Diego, California; Ni-Co Symposium at TMS 2013 in Texas, USA; and the Copper 2013 Conference in Chile.&#160;I am the Faculty Advisor of the CIM-MetSoc Student Chapter at Memorial University that I founded in 2008. Our Chapter has own the Outstanding Award in 2010. I am an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Mining, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (IJMMME).&#160;<a href="http://ijmmme.avestia.com/board/">http://ijmmme.avestia.com/board/</a>.</p></content><feed-type>RSS</feed-type><feed-rss/><feed-calendar/><article-feed-style>Standard</article-feed-style><article-feed-featured>No</article-feed-featured><article-feed-date>No</article-feed-date><article-feed-author>No</article-feed-author><article-feed-condenseimages>No</article-feed-condenseimages><internal-feed-rss><path>/</path></internal-feed-rss><internal-feed-events><path>/</path></internal-feed-events><feed-teasers>No</feed-teasers><feed-style>Simple</feed-style><feed-research>No</feed-research><feed-numitems>4</feed-numitems><feed-layout>Normal</feed-layout><php><path>/</path></php><external-page><path>/</path></external-page><feed><content-source>None</content-source><internal-feed><path>/</path></internal-feed><feed-style>Simple</feed-style><article-feed-style>Standard</article-feed-style><article-feed-featured>No</article-feed-featured><article-feed-date>No</article-feed-date><article-feed-author>No</article-feed-author><article-feed-condenseimages>No</article-feed-condenseimages><feed-teasers>No</feed-teasers><feed-teaser-length>180</feed-teaser-length><feed-layout>Normal</feed-layout><feed-research>No</feed-research><feed-numitems>4</feed-numitems><feed-style-pages>Standard</feed-style-pages><reusable-page><path>/</path></reusable-page><php><path>/</path></php><php-querystring/></feed><action><style>Primary</style><size>Normal</size><label></label><link-type/><page><path>/</path></page><anchor>#</anchor><file><path>/</path></file><url>http://</url></action></section></system-data-structure></content><path>/people/cbe/alam,shafiq</path><dynamic-metadata><name>show-in-nav</name><value>No</value></dynamic-metadata><dynamic-metadata><name>unit</name></dynamic-metadata><dynamic-metadata><name>show-nav</name><value>Yes</value></dynamic-metadata><dynamic-metadata><name>show-prev-next</name><value>No</value></dynamic-metadata><link>site://engineering/people/cbe/alam,shafiq</link><site>engineering</site><name>alam,shafiq</name><display-name>Profile</display-name><title>Shafiq Alam</title><keywords>chembio, agtech-plants</keywords></specified-page><specified-page type="page"><content><system-data-structure><show-in-nav>Yes</show-in-nav><type>Individual</type><firstname>Oon-Doo</firstname><lastname>Baik</lastname><nsid/><title></title><credentials><value>PhD</value><value>Other</value></credentials><credentials-other>PEng</credentials-other><pronouns>--</pronouns><pronouns-other/><professional-title>Other</professional-title><professional-title-other>Department Head &amp; Professor</professional-title-other><department-unit>Chemical and Biological Engineering</department-unit><employee-type>Faculty</employee-type><employee-type>Leadership</employee-type><name/><email>oon-doo.baik@usask.ca</email><phone>(306) 966-6590</phone><phone>(306) 966-5320</phone><fax/><hours/><address>Room 3B48.5 Engineering Building</address><address>57 Campus Drive</address><address>Saskatoon, SK</address><address>S7N 5A9</address><map-embed/><social>None</social><social-url/><website/><website-use>No</website-use><summary></summary><img type="file"><content></content><path>/images/depts/cbe/baik-profile.jpg</path><link>site://engineering/images/depts/cbe/baik-profile.jpg</link><site>engineering</site><name>baik-profile.jpg</name><file-size>205877</file-size><width>693</width><height>995</height></img><bg-img type="file"><content></content><path>/images/profiles-engineering-building-fall-2021.jpg</path><link>site://engineering/images/profiles-engineering-building-fall-2021.jpg</link><site>engineering</site><name>profiles-engineering-building-fall-2021.jpg</name><file-size>15069345</file-size><width>5472</width><height>3648</height></bg-img><custom-cta><custom-label>ORCiD</custom-label><custom-link>https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4342-3559</custom-link></custom-cta><research_areas><title>Research Area(s)</title><research_area>Efficient Extraction of Bioactive Components</research_area><research_area>Radio Frequency Heating</research_area><research_area>Food and Biomaterial Processing</research_area><research_area>Heat and Mass Transfer</research_area><research_area>Reaction Kinetics</research_area><research_area>Ultrasound, Pulsed Electric Field</research_area><research_area>Process Design and Optimization</research_area><research_area>Food Safety and Quality</research_area></research_areas><section><heading>Biography</heading><media-type>None</media-type><media-img><path>/</path></media-img><img-link-internal><path>/</path></img-link-internal><img-link-external/><media-video/><media-map/><media-caption/><media-align>Above content</media-align><content-type>Rich text</content-type><content><h3><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Education and Experience</strong></span></h3>

<p>My research interest center around the area of environmental bioengineering, aiming to address some of the environmental problems encountered in the petroleum and mining industries, as well as the agriculture sector. These include application of the bacteria of sulphur cycle in treatment of acid mine drainage, sour gas and waters contaminated with sulphide and nitrate, containment of souring and biocorrosion in oil reservoirs, and control of H2S emission from livestock operations. Potential for generating energy during the treatment of wastewaters through utilization of microbial fuel cell type bioreactors is also investigated.<br/><br/>Development of biotechnologies for remediation of soils and waters contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), heavy petroleum compounds and naphthenic acids, with the latter being a major environmental issue associated with processing of oil sands in Western Canada, is the other component of my research. Development and utilization of novel bioreactors such as bead mill and circulating packed-bed bioreactors for improving mass transfer and bioremediation kinetics is one of the main aspects of research in this area. Feasibility of an integrated chemical and biological approach for the treatment of complex organic pollutants is also being evaluated.</p>

<p>Ph.D. McGill University, Chemical Engineering, 2002<br/> M.Eng. Sichuan University, Chemical Engineering, 1992<br/> B.Eng. Sichuan University, Chemical Engineering, 1989</p>
<p>Registered Professional Engineer, APEGS, Saskatchewan</p>
<p>Dr. Catherine Niu is a professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Niu has passion on biosorption and adsorption research. Her research includes developing and characterizing novel biosorbents/adsorbents, optimizing biosorption/adsorption processes, and studying the adsorption kinetics, equilibrium, mechanism, and desorption. The diversified and promising applications of biosorption/adsorption technology have led to the development of her research projects in the areas of biopesticide production, water treatment, gas purification,&#160; biochemical adsorption, and more.</p>
<p><strong>Research Projects</strong></p>
<p><strong>Enhancement of Biopesticide Production with Biosorption/Adsorption</strong></p>
<p>The global population relies significantly on agricultural products, sourced from both plants and animals for consumption. However, these products are increasingly challenged by agricultural pests. Synthetic pesticides have been used to control these pests, playing a role in improving the yield and quality of agricultural products worldwide. Despite this, extensive use of synthetic pesticides has led to adverse health effects on humans, other forms of life, and ecosystems. Biopesticides, due to their environmentally friendly and renewable nature, have garnered more attention in recent years. However, due to their higher costs, varying impacts on pest issues across different agricultural methods, and other challenges, biopesticides currently make up a small portion of the global crop protection market. Dr. Niu&#8217;s research aims to enhance biopesticide production and reduce production costs through the use of biosorption and adsorption technologies. Controlled release of adsorbed biopesticides is also an area of investigation.</p>
<p><strong>Dehydration of Fuel Bio-alcohols</strong></p>
<p>There is increasing interest in using bio-alcohols as a sustainable energy source, but the purification processes for bio-alcohol dehydration are highly energy-intensive. Dr. Niu&#8217;s research in this area includes developing cost-effective biomaterials for selective water adsorption from alcohol-water mixtures and optimizing the bio-alcohol dehydration process in packed columns using biosorbents.</p>
<p><strong>Biosorption in Wastewater Treatment</strong></p>
<p>Dr. Niu has conducted research on biosorption for industrial effluent treatment and metal recovery. The focus is on developing biosorbents with high uptake capacity, as well as controlled size, shape, and stability.</p>
<p><strong>Biosorption of Biochemicals and Drug Delivery</strong></p>
<p>Dr. Niu&#8217;s research also explores the biosorption of biochemicals, such as proteins, amino acids, and polysaccharides. The aim is to achieve effective loading and controlled release of these biochemicals, with a particular focus on drug delivery applications.</p>

<p>Professor of Chemical Engineering, University of Saskatchewan</p>
<p>Ph.D., University of British Columbia, 1998<br/>M.Sc. (ENG), Shiraz University, 1992<br/>B.Sc. (ENG), Abadan Institute of Technology (Currently: Petroleum University of Technology), 1988<br/>Professional Engineer (APEGS, Saskatchewan)</p>
<h2>Research Projects</h2>
<p>My current areas of research interests are:</p>
<p><strong>Treatment of Polluted Air</strong></p>
<p>We do research on a wide range of catalysts and processes for treatment of polluted air. The presence of pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (e.g. benzene, acetone, solvents) in air can cause odor problems and potentially health concerns. Catalytic processes based on controlled reactions with ozone gas are used to oxidize organic air pollutants under controlled conditions with minimum consumption of energy.</p>
<p><strong>Degradation of Emerging Pollutants in Water</strong></p>
<p>One area of research related to water treatment is catalytic advanced oxidation technologies. Ongoing research is focused on environmental catalysis and application of ozone and advanced oxidation processes to remove emerging pollutants (e.g. such as bisphenol A, pesticides, residual pharmaceuticals and personal care products) from water and wastewater. Emerging pollutants have been detected in bodies of water in Canada and around the world. Their presence in water can be a serious health concern for aquatic life and humans. Recent reports about the presence of these pollutants in water and their alarmingly adverse effects on fish population and characteristics indicate that there is a real demand for knowledge and effective technologies for their removal in water and wastewater treatment industries.</p>
<p><strong>Application of Ultrasound in Decomposition of Toxic Chemicals in Water</strong></p>
<p>Application of ultrasound energy in water leads to extreme conditions in the system. In a sonicated medium, an extremely large number of sub-micron size bubbles are generated and the bubbles collapse in a matter of microseconds. While the reaction medium stays at a mild temperature, high temperatures (in the range of 5000 &#176;C), high pressures (in the range of 1000 atm) and high cooling rates (&#126;1000 &#176;C/s) occur inside the collapsing bubbles. Under these extreme conditions, harmful chemical compounds can be decomposed.&#160; In addition, a large number of active chemical species are generated in the reaction medium outside the collapsing bubbles. We focus on the decomposition of harmful chemicals in water and mathematical modeling of the phenomena in sonication processes.</p>
<p><strong>Using Functionalized Adsorbents to Remove Residual Antibiotics in Wastewater</strong></p>
<p>The use of antibiotics in veterinary and human medicine is widespread. Antibiotics that are used in industrial animal production facilities can find their way into the environment mostly through waste and manure handling and management processes. An important health risk of the presence of antibiotics in nature is the increase in the number of antibiotic resistant bacteria strains, which in turn is of great health and ecological concern. We work on the development of functionalized adsorbents and the associated processes to effectively remove the antibiotics from wastewater streams.</p></content><feed-type>RSS</feed-type><feed-rss/><feed-calendar/><article-feed-style>Standard</article-feed-style><article-feed-featured>No</article-feed-featured><article-feed-date>No</article-feed-date><article-feed-author>No</article-feed-author><article-feed-condenseimages>No</article-feed-condenseimages><internal-feed-rss><path>/</path></internal-feed-rss><internal-feed-events><path>/</path></internal-feed-events><feed-teasers>No</feed-teasers><feed-style>Simple</feed-style><feed-research>No</feed-research><feed-numitems>4</feed-numitems><feed-layout>Normal</feed-layout><php><path>/</path></php><external-page><path>/</path></external-page><feed><content-source>None</content-source><internal-feed><path>/</path></internal-feed><feed-style>Simple</feed-style><article-feed-style>Standard</article-feed-style><article-feed-featured>No</article-feed-featured><article-feed-date>No</article-feed-date><article-feed-author>No</article-feed-author><article-feed-condenseimages>No</article-feed-condenseimages><feed-teasers>No</feed-teasers><feed-teaser-length>180</feed-teaser-length><feed-layout>Normal</feed-layout><feed-research>No</feed-research><feed-numitems>4</feed-numitems><feed-style-pages>Standard</feed-style-pages><reusable-page><path>/</path></reusable-page><php><path>/</path></php><php-querystring/></feed><action><style>Primary</style><size>Normal</size><label></label><link-type/><page><path>/</path></page><anchor>#</anchor><file><path>/</path></file><url>http://</url></action></section><section><heading>Patents Granted</heading><media-type>None</media-type><media-img><path>/</path></media-img><img-link-internal><path>/</path></img-link-internal><img-link-external/><media-video/><media-map/><media-caption/><media-align>Above content</media-align><content-type>Rich text</content-type><content><ul>
