ROB DUTTON (BE'93)

49th C.J. Mackenzie Distinguished Lecturer

Our 2026 gala celebrates alumnus, Rob Dutton (BE'93, Chemical Engineering).

Rob Dutton (BE’93) grew up with a curiosity for how things work. His journey from USask Engineering to the heart of Canada’s energy landscape shows exactly that. He has more than 30 years of experience leading in the energy, power generation and industrial sectors, constantly working at the intersection of innovation and impact.

In his latest role, Dutton advises Augur Venture Capital, an emerging firm accelerating next-generation energy technologies powered by artificial intelligence. Before that, he served as CEO and board member of Heartland Generation Ltd., overseeing more than 2,600 megawatts of generation capacity in Alberta and British Columbia, and leading the company through operational transformation, a sharpened safety culture and a bold pivot toward cleaner energy sources. His earlier decade at Devon Canada Corporation included senior leadership culminating in his appointment as president, managing a 130,000-barrel-per-day upstream oil and gas enterprise and driving some of Canada’s most advanced energy projects.

Dutton’s story extends beyond boardrooms and the energy industry. Honouring his roots as a Huskie and Saskatchewan Roughrider football player, he coaches youth football, mentoring young athletes in teamwork, accountability and perseverance. Those same qualities of community, commitment and leadership are what make Dutton an engineer the world needs.

Each year the C.J. Mackenzie Gala recognizes the achievements of a member of our alumni community who has attained a position of eminence within their profession. They are honoured as the evening’s Distinguished Lecturer and are inducted into the College of Engineering’s Alumni Wall of Distinction.
