Marvin Romanow delivers 2016 C.J. Mackenzie Distinguished Lecture

The college marked the 40th anniversary of its C.J. Mackenzie Gala of Engineering Excellence with alumnus Marvin Romanow (BE’77, Electrical) as its distinguished lecturer, at TCU Place in Saskatoon on January 26, 2016.

He spoke on Canada, Energy and Leadership.

Romanow’s impressive career and leadership experience were the centrepiece of the gala evening, which drew about 480 people. Romanow earned his Bachelor of Engineering (great distinction) and MBA at the University of Saskatchewan (U of S), has studied general management at Insead in France and completed the Program for Management Development at Harvard Business School. In May 2015, he joined the board of Freehold Royalties Ltd., a Calgary-based oil company and serves on the advisory council of the Edwards School of Business at the U of S, where he is also an executive in residence. He is a director for Emergex Capital Partners and the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubshi and a commissioner on the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission.

He is a former president and CEO of Nexen Inc., where he had previously served in the roles of executive vice-president, chief financial officer and vice-president finance. Prior to joining Nexen he worked in senior positions at Wascana Energy and Dome Petroleum. During his career, he co-chaired a $75-million capital campaign for the U of S and served for four years as division leader of the Nexen United Way. As well, he served on the board of the Canadian Energy Research Institute for 20 years, and the University of Alberta Water Advisory Council.

Since 1976, the gala has been celebrating the achievements of our distinguished alumni. Students, faculty and staff in the college, members of the university community, professional engineers, industry representatives and our engineering alumni were in attendance at the one-of-a-kind networking event.
