Machibroda wins Huskie All-Around Male Athlete Award
The award recognizes an upper-year male student-athlete “who during his entire career as a Huskie exhibited the highest qualities of sportsmanship and citizenship.”
University of Saskatchewan (USask) Civil Engineering student and all-star defensive lineman Evan Machibroda is the 2020 winner of the Huskie Athletics Male All-Around Athlete Award – the Rusty MacDonald Cup.
In his final season with the Huskies, Machibroda was named a first-team football all-Canadian for the second year in a row and was the Canada West conference’s Outstanding Lineman.
In an earlier interview with Huskie Athletics, football head coach Scott Flory said that Machibroda possesses the relentless determination needed to succeed at his position. “If there was one characteristic I could put in every defensive lineman, it would be to never stop, never quit and Evan embodies that.”
Though Machibroda was drafted in 2019 by the Canadian Football League’s Edmonton Eskimos, he chose to return to university to finish his engineering degree. After graduation, he plans to pursue football with the Eskimos.
Machibroda’s community activity includes organizing a collection of used football gear for inner-city school kids, coaching at a variety of Huskie football camps and guest coaching at spring and fall football camps at his old high school, Holy Cross, in addition to volunteering for Football Saskatchewan.
A strong student as well, Machibroda was named to the 2018-19 Huskie All-Academic Team.
Asked how he was able to achieve success both on the field and in the classroom, Machibroda said, “I think the key is time management and being able to find a balance between school, athletics, and your personal life.”
When he eventually begins his engineering career, Machibroda says he would like to practice in an area involving water resources or site remediation.
