The USask Safety Recognition Award recognizes an employee that goes above and beyond to keep USask students, staff and faculty safe.

Peace, who is a departmental assistant in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been a diligent health and safety leader in the College of Engineering for many years and is currently the employee co-chair of the Local Safety Committee (LSC).

Through his work on the LSC, Peace led the development of the Engineering Safety Management System (ESMS), a key framework for helping to keep students, staff and faculty safe.

“Rob recognized that inconsistent safety practices between different research labs and departments limited collaboration because they impeded the smooth movement of chemicals and graduate students between different labs,” Carey Simonson, associate dean graduate studies and strategic projects, wrote in a recommendation letter.

After an intensive review of safety policy and practices within the college, several meetings were held to settle on common practices.

“In these meetings, Rob used his practical knowledge and strong leadership skills to guide the process (and the sometimes very detailed discussions) relentlessly but respectfully towards our goal of a uniform ESMS,” Simonson stated.

The ESMS has been adopted and implemented college-wide to ensure consistently high levels of safety, to drive continual improvement, and an established culture of safety.
