Researcher launches app, website for dialysis patients
Amira Abdelrasoul, a researcher in the University of Saskatchewan College of Engineering recently launched an app and a website with information for kidney dialysis patients. Both were funded by the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation.
What are the two new digital tools you have recently developed for hemodialysis patients?
I have recently launched two new digital tools for hemodialysis patients: the Abdelrasoul Dialysis app and the Abdelrasoul Dialysis website. The app has been developed by Push Interactions , available on the App Store and Google Play Store, aims to improve care, connect patients in a community, and contribute to research. Patients can share experiences, participate in surveys, and gain support and knowledge. The website, in English and French, has been designed and empowered by Level Up Pro, and it serves as a valuable resource, providing essential information and research updates. Both tools are designed to empower patients, enhance their experience, and contribute to advancements in dialysis care and research.
How are they intended to help patients?
I am committed to enhancing the quality of life for hemodialysis patients and supporting patient-centered research. The app provides a platform for patients to connect, share experiences, and contribute to research. It is supported by Dr. Ahmed Shoker, aiming to empower patients and improve care for those affected by kidney failure. The website and app raise awareness through blogs and provide research updates from the Abdelrasoul research team, keeping patients informed about advancements in dialysis treatments.
What does the app do?
The Abdelrasoul Dialysis app is designed to create a patient-centered environment for hemodialysis patients, offering a supportive community. It is the first app in Canada for dialysis patients and provides a platform for connecting, sharing experiences, participating in surveys, and gaining knowledge and support. Unique features include building a strong supportive community, engaging patients in research collaboration through feedback, and providing updates on the latest research developments. The app empowers patients to contribute to hemodialysis treatment advancement and enhances research for improved quality of life.
What has been the response so far?
The website has been launched, and we have received interest through sign-ups to the newsletter. We have also started tracking performance metrics, including questions through the chat widget and traffic on pages.
The iOS version has just been launched this month and the Android version a few months ago. We will start monitoring the number of patients who have signed up, traffic on resources, and their participation in surveys, and gather feedback from patients for app improvements.
What is your hope for the mobile app?
Our hope for the app is that it becomes a valuable tool for dialysis patients in Canada and worldwide. Nowadays technology has become an integral part of our lives, making apps easier and more convenient for patients. The app offers convenient access for users anytime, anywhere, available on iOS and Android. Patients will feel connected in a community, sharing experiences, participating in surveys, and gaining support and knowledge. The platform gathers patient feedback and insights, leading to improved care and outcomes. Understanding correlations based on patients' experiences is crucial for better membrane development, enhancing patients' quality of life. The app also empowers young patients, enabling them to actively participate and access valuable resources for better lives.
Are these tools intended for Saskatchewan patients only? Or beyond? If beyond, where else are you hoping to reach patients?
My ultimate goal is to support millions of dialysis patients worldwide. The app is freely accessible everywhere and at any time, making it available to support dialysis patients in Saskatchewan, Canada, and around the world.
How do you ensure the privacy and security of user data within the app?
User data privacy and security are of utmost importance to us. We have implemented restricted security measures necessary to safeguard all patients' privacy and confidential information within the app and we are committed to maintaining the highest level of data protection.
How were the app and the website funded?
The app and website were funded primarily through the Saskatchewan Health Foundation Research Connections Grant. This grant aims to achieve knowledge mobilization initiatives, sharing hemodialysis membrane research findings with patients and non-academic mediums. It helped build relationships with stakeholders, including patient groups, decision-makers, and healthcare professionals. We seek external funding to enhance the app, adding features like chat rooms and live discussions. Involving healthcare professionals and researchers in nephrology will improve insights and patient feedback, advancing hemodialysis care and research. Leveraging resources, expertise, and patient insights, we aim to make a significant impact and drive positive change in the hemodialysis community.
