The University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Engineering is proud to share that Caden Thiessen, a third-year chemical engineering student, has been named the 2025 recipient of the Brian Eckel Memorial Scholarship, presented by the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies - Saskatchewan (ACEC-SK).

The scholarship, first awarded in 2003, honours the memory of USask Engineering alumnus Brian Eckel (BE’80, MSc’85). Brian was a respected industry leader whose career exemplified excellence, mentorship and service. Each year, the award recognizes a USask Engineering student who demonstrates strong academic achievement, leadership and community involvement, values that Eckel championed throughout his life.

Thiessen exemplifies those qualities through his leadership and service. As president of the Chemical Engineering Student Society (ChESS), he is dedicated to building and strengthening the student engineering community. He also mentors first-year engineering students, helping them navigate the transition into university and develop confidence as future engineers. Within his hometown of Lloydminster, he is an active volunteer with the St. Anthony’s church, the minor hockey association and the city’s youth football program.

“Receiving this scholarship is an incredible honour,” said Thiessen. “It reinforces the importance of leadership and giving back which I think is so important as an engineer. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent those values within our college and community.”

Dr. Akindele Odeshi, USask Engineering’s associate dean academic, attended the ACEC-SK awards ceremony to celebrate Thiessen’s achievement.

“Caden is an outstanding student whose leadership and commitment to service reflect the very best of our college,” said Odeshi. “Caden is a deserving recipient and a positive role model within our student body.”

Congratulations to Caden Thiessen on this well-earned recognition. His leadership, service and passion for engineering uphold the legacy of Brian Eckel and the principles that continue to inspire Saskatchewan’s consulting engineering community.
