USask Engineering’s Dr. Hui Wang recognized for global research leadership

Dr. Hui Wang of the College of Chemical and Biological Engineering at USask has been awarded the annual 2025 Global Research Leadership Faculty Award.

Dr. Hui Wang (PhD), professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan (USask), has been awarded the 2025 Global Research Leadership Faculty Award in recognition of his exceptional contributions to advancing the university’s international reputation through research.

Presented annually by USask, the award honours faculty who strengthen the university’s global profile, demonstrate international impact through research activities and contribute to the diversification and inclusiveness of communities or improve quality of life through their research.

Wang’s pioneering research in catalysis and materials science has positioned USask as a leader in international research-focused collaborations. Working closely with scientists at the Canadian Light Source (CLS), Wang has developed advanced instrumentation and methodologies for catalysis studies.

“Working with Canadian Light Source’s beamline scientists, we have developed state-of-the-art instrumentations and methodologies for catalysis studies and made them available to the public users. On the other hand, these facilities allow us to understand the catalytic phenomena to molecular and/or atomic levels,” said Wang. “My work, to some extent, demonstrates that collaboration between all members of society is of utmost importance. I hope that the students in my group engage this same collaborative mindset, in order to open up new opportunities in their future work and careers.”

He has helped foster collaborative research teams that cross international boundaries. Catalyst development is at the heart of Wang’s research and catalytic processes improve our daily lives, such as making cleaner fuels to producing fertilizers to creating advanced materials for manufacturing and technology. Through his work Dr. Wang is developing clean energy solutions and building a sustainable future, further underlining USask’s commitment to the “be what the world needs.”

As part of the award, Dr. Wang will receive a $1,500 grant to support activities that further promote USask’s international reputation.
