The University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Engineering proudly shares that Dr. Xiaodong Liang has recently been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), recognizing her outstanding contributions and achievements in the field of engineering.

Dr. Liang’s elevation to IEEE Fellow places her among the top 0.1 per cent of IEEE voting members worldwide. As one of the most prestigious honours in the global engineering community, it recognizes her influential contributions to the protection of power systems and the analysis of electrical submersible pump systems.

As a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Technology Solutions for Energy Security in Remote, Northern and Indigenous Communities, Dr. Liang’s research is creating real-world impact. Her work supports energy systems that are cleaner, more reliable and better able to withstand extreme environments, supporting communities that face some of Canada’s toughest energy challenges.

In fall 2025, her Tier 2 Canada Research Chair was renewed, allowing her to expand her research in renewable energy, energy storage and small modular reactors. Through this work, she is advancing technologies with the potential to significantly improve energy reliability for remote and northern communities.

Dr. Liang is widely recognized as a leader in her field. She is a Fellow of The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), deputy editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications and co-editor-in-chief of the IEEE Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

She has appeared annually on the Stanford list of the world’s top two per cent of scientists since 2019. With more than 290 peer-reviewed publications, six book chapters and three U.S. and Canadian patents, her research continues to advance global understanding of next-generation power systems.
