Women’s History Month: Engineering a healthier world

This October, USask Engineering is proud to celebrate Women’s History Month.

By Engineering Communications

This October, USask Engineering is proud to celebrate Women’s History Month by sharing the stories and perspectives of our female students, faculty and alumni.

Since 1946, when Isobel (Izzy) Beatrice Daw became our first female graduate, women of USask Engineering have continued the tradition of being leaders, change-makers and innovators.

This year, we’re continuing the story through a series of Q&A features, highlighting the voices of women who define what it means to be a University of Saskatchewan engineer.

Who is a woman in engineering or STEM that inspires you and why?

Maria Skłodowska-Curie. She was a pioneer in the field of radioactivity, and her research won her two Nobel Prizes. Her life was sacrificed to conduct her research, which revolutionized the world of medicine, saving millions. I admire her work and would also like to contribute to making the world healthier by using my USask Engineering degree.

What has been the most rewarding part of your journey in engineering so far?

The most rewarding part of my journey so far is learning new things. I enjoy going outside, or just looking around, and being able to analyze how everything works [and applying what I’ve learnt in my classes].

What advice would you share with other women in engineering?

My advice is not to be scared to ask for help. It is ok not to be perfect or unable to figure out everything on your own. It does not make you or your achievements any less valid or exceptional.

What does Women’s History Month mean to you?

Women's History Month is about celebrating the women who opened the door for us to be able to pursue our dreams. As well as to support those who will be the first women [to achieve a new milestone].
