Zhang appointed department head of Chemical and Biological Engineering

Dr. Lifeng Zhang (PhD) has been appointed head of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.

Dr. Lifeng Zhang (PhD) has been appointed head of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering in the University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Engineering for a five-year term, starting July 1, 2026. 

A distinguished researcher and educator, Zhang's work focuses on improving how we handle materials and produce energy in a cleaner, more efficient and environmentally friendly way. His research areas include fluidization and multiphase flow systems, clean energy and sustainability, biomass and bioenergy, reaction engineering, particle technology and process intensification. His work has advanced technologies in biomass utilization, air pollution control, fluidized-bed drying, and electrostatics in particulate systems. 

Zhang earned his Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Science degrees from Zhejiang University, a Master of Science degree through the Singapore-MIT Alliance, and a PhD from the University of Waterloo. 

The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering is recognized for its contributions to sustainable energy, environmental stewardship and process innovation through research, teaching and industry partnerships.
